Whiplash

Whiplash is a description of injuries that affect the neck and back.

A whiplash injury may be the result of impulsive stretching of the spine, primarily the anterior longitudinal ligament which is stretched or tears as the head snaps back and forth in an involuntary movement causing a whiplash injury. In severe cases whiplash can be related to more serious and permanent brain injuries.

Recovery periods depend upon the seriousness of the impact and the extent of damage to the ligaments within the neck.   Recommended treatments include keeping the neck mobile and performing specific neck exercises.

Whiplash is often caused by road traffic accidents but can be caused by any kind of accident which results in an impulsive stretching of the spine such as sporting accidents, falls or collisions of any type.
